Alonissos Yacht Charter Guide: The Pristine Marine Sanctuary
Alonissos is a charter location in Sporades Islands, a yacht charter area in Greece.
Alonissos Charter Guide
Alonissos is the crown jewel of eco-conscious sailing in Greece. Sitting at the heart of Europe's largest marine protected area, it is a serene, pine-draped paradise that feels worlds away from the busy, high-energy charter hubs of Skiathos. For a yacht charter, Alonissos is the ultimate destination for nature lovers. It offers crystal-clear emerald waters, a deeply peaceful, unpretentious atmosphere, and the unique thrill of sailing through an archipelago where dolphins and the rare Mediterranean monk seal roam freely.
Alonissos Navigation
Navigating the waters around Alonissos requires close attention to the prevailing summer Meltemi (which blows from the north-northeast) and strict adherence to environmental regulations. The island serves as the gateway to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades. Skippers must be fully aware of the park's designated zones. Zone B covers Alonissos and its immediate satellite islets and is generally open to yachts. However, entering the highly protected Zone A—which includes remote islands like Kyra Panagia, Piperi, and Gioura—requires purchasing an entry ticket in advance and following strict anchoring, speed, and approach restrictions to protect the delicate marine ecosystem.

Alonissos Anchorage
The island's main maritime hub is the port of Patitiri, tucked into a dramatic, rocky bay on the southern coast. Yachts can moor stern-to on the town quay, which provides good shelter from the northerly Meltemi, though the basin can suffer from an uncomfortable surge if strong southerly or southeasterly winds develop. Just to the northeast, the charming fishing village of Steni Vala offers a fantastic, deeply recessed natural inlet. It is a highly sought-after mooring spot where yachts can tie up right in front of traditional seafood tavernas in an exceptionally sheltered environment. For wild anchorages, the channel between the eastern coast of Alonissos and the adjacent island of Peristera creates a protected, lake-like cruising ground. The bays of Tzortzi and Leftos Gialos offer spectacular daytime stops in glowing turquoise water. If you venture north into the Marine Park, Planitis Bay on the uninhabited island of Kyra Panagia is an absolute must-visit—a massive, completely landlocked natural harbor offering flawless overnight protection from all wind directions.
Alonissos General Information
The history and modern life of Alonissos were dramatically reshaped by a severe earthquake in 1961, which forced the local population to abandon their hilltop capital and move down to the port of Patitiri. However, the abandoned Old Village (Chora) was subsequently and beautifully restored. Perched high on a steep ridge, it is now a magical maze of traditional stone houses, blooming bougainvillea, and quiet cafes offering breathtaking, panoramic sunset views over the Aegean.
Culturally, Alonissos is defined by its deep commitment to conservation and a remarkably relaxed pace of life. In Steni Vala, you will find the local rescue and rehabilitation center for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus). The island's gastronomy is superb, prioritizing high-quality local ingredients; an evening ashore must include tasting the famous local Alonissos tuna, fresh lobster spaghetti, and traditional fried cheese pies, providing the perfect end to a day spent snorkeling in pristine marine reserves.
