Round Trip

The Venetian Ionian: Olive-Clad Shores of Corfu, Paxos & The Blue Caves of Antipaxos

Northern Ionian Yacht Charter Itinerary

Northern Ionian Yacht Charter Itinerary

The Northern Ionian offers a sailing environment that stands in magnificent, verdant contrast to the stark, sun-bleached archipelagos of the Aegean. Here, the islands are blanketed in millions of ancient olive trees and towering cypresses that plunge directly into impossibly calm, emerald waters. The Venetian Ionian is an elegant, highly civilized seven-day itinerary designed for those who appreciate smooth, predictable sailing, aristocratic architecture, and a deeply Italianate maritime culture.

Sailing this region is defined by its exceptionally forgiving weather patterns. The summer days typically begin with glassy, mirror-like seas perfect for motoring into tight anchorages, followed by the gentle, predictable arrival of the afternoon Maestro wind from the northwest—providing a perfect, relaxing beam reach. The route takes you from the protected eastern coast of Corfu across to the chic, miniature archipelago of Paxos and Antipaxos, before looping along the dramatically lush, mountainous coastline of mainland Epirus.

This journey is an exploration of cultural and natural refinement. You will transition from dining in the quiet, shallow-water fishing villages of southern Corfu to dropping your hook beneath the sheer, white-limestone cliffs and sea caves of western Paxos. It perfectly balances the untouched, wild beauty of secluded mainland lagoons with the sophisticated, imperial grandeur of Corfu Town, offering a masterclass in luxurious, slow-paced Mediterranean cruising.

Day 1: Corfu (Gouvia Marina) to Petriti (Corfu)

Nautical Miles: 15+

Travel Time: 2 hours

Your voyage begins at Gouvia Marina, the premier yachting hub of the Ionian Sea, located just north of Corfu Town. After completing your yacht familiarization and stowing your provisions, you will cast off and set a southerly course along the lush, sheltered eastern coastline of Corfu. This initial passage is smooth and relaxing, serving as a gentle introduction to the remarkably calm, protected waters of the Ionian channel.
Your destination for the first evening is Petriti, a highly traditional, working fishing village tucked into a wide, shallow bay on Corfu's southeastern shore. Because the waters here are exceptionally calm and shallow, the sea is noticeably warmer, making it a fantastic spot for your first afternoon swim. Drop the hook in the mud and sand bottom, or tie up at the small pier. Spend your first night ashore dining at one of the rustic, water's-edge tavernas, known for serving some of the freshest, most authentic seafood on the island.
Route Highlights
  • Enjoying a relaxed, smooth-water introduction to Ionian sailing along Corfu's lush eastern coast.
  • Anchoring in the warm, exceptionally calm, and shallow waters of Petriti bay.
  • Dining on freshly caught local seafood at a rustic, traditional waterfront taverna.

Day 2: Petriti to Lakka (Paxos)

Nautical Miles: 18+

Travel Time: 3 hours

Weigh anchor from Petriti and set your bow south, preparing for a spectacular blue-water crossing to the island of Paxos. As you leave Corfu behind, you will likely catch the gentle afternoon Maestro wind, allowing for a glorious, quiet sail across the channel. As the low-lying, completely green silhouette of Paxos comes into view, steer toward the island's northernmost tip.
Your destination is Lakka, a breathtaking, horseshoe-shaped bay that is almost entirely enclosed by hills covered in dense olive and cypress groves. The entrance is narrow, revealing a massive, naturally protected pool of luminous turquoise water over a bright white sandy seabed. Drop the anchor and take a long swim in waters that feel more like a lagoon than the open sea. In the evening, take the dinghy ashore to the vibrant, Italianate village lined with boutique shops, cocktail bars, and excellent dining options hidden among the narrow, paved alleys.
Route Highlights
  • Enjoying a steady, wind-driven crossing from Corfu to the chic island of Paxos.
  • Navigating the narrow entrance into the spectacular, turquoise lagoon of Lakka bay.
  • Exploring the elegant, Italian-influenced alleys and vibrant waterfront of Lakka village.

Day 3: Lakka to Antipaxos & Gaios (Paxos)

Nautical Miles: 10+

Travel Time: 1.5 hours

Cast off from Lakka and sail down the dramatic western coast of Paxos. Unlike the gentle eastern shore, the west coast is a sheer, towering wall of white limestone cliffs riddled with massive sea caves, such as the famous Blue Caves of Ipapanti. After exploring the caves by dinghy, continue south to the tiny, vine-covered satellite island of Antipaxos. Drop your anchor in Voutoumi Bay, universally regarded as having some of the clearest, most intensely blue water in the entire Mediterranean, and spend the afternoon swimming from the yacht.
In the late afternoon, make the short passage back north along the eastern coast of Paxos to its capital, Gaios. The approach to Gaios is one of the most unique in Greece; the harbor is hidden behind the heavily wooded islet of Agios Nikolaos, creating a winding, river-like canal that you must navigate to reach the town quay. Moor stern-to right on the vibrant waterfront plaza, stepping directly off your passerelle into a sophisticated hub of Venetian architecture, excellent cafes, and chic boutiques.
Route Highlights
  • Exploring the massive, towering white limestone cliffs and deep sea caves of western Paxos.
  • Swimming in the legendary, luminous, Caribbean-like waters of Voutoumi Beach on Antipaxos.
  • Navigating the spectacular, hidden river-like canal entrance into the cosmopolitan port of Gaios.

Day 4: Gaios to Parga (Mainland)

Nautical Miles: 12

Travel Time: 2 hours

Leave the sophisticated charm of Paxos behind and set an easterly course, crossing the channel toward the dramatic, mountainous coastline of mainland Epirus. This is a robust, highly enjoyable morning reach that points you directly toward one of the most picturesque towns on the Greek mainland: Parga. Though it is a mainland town, Parga possesses the absolute soul and aesthetic of a vibrant island, featuring brightly colored houses cascading down a steep hillside toward the sea.
As you approach, the town is dominated by a massive, imposing Venetian-Norman castle perched on a rocky headland. You can choose to anchor in the wide, sandy expanse of Valtos Beach just west of the castle, or maneuver into the main harbor if space permits. Spend the afternoon climbing through the narrow, bougainvillea-draped alleys to the castle ruins, which offer a commanding, panoramic view over the Ionian Sea, before enjoying an evening in the lively, cosmopolitan town center.
Route Highlights
  • Executing a satisfying, open-water crossing from the Paxos archipelago to the Epirotic mainland.
  • Arriving by sea to the stunning, amphitheater-like colorful settlement of Parga.
  • Climbing the historic Venetian-Norman castle for panoramic sunset views over the Ionian.

Day 5: Parga to Sivota (Mainland)

Nautical Miles: 15+

Travel Time: 2.5 hours

Cast off from Parga and begin a scenic northbound cruise along the rugged mainland coast. This stretch of Epirus is famous for its hidden coves and thick forests that stretch right down to the shoreline. Your objective is the Sivota archipelago, a cluster of lush, tiny islets situated just off the mainland that create a complex, maze-like maritime environment filled with stunning, sheltered anchorages.
Before heading into the main port, navigate your yacht into the narrow channel between the islets of Agios Nikolaos and Mourtemeno to drop the hook in "Pisina" (The Pool). True to its name, this bay features incredibly clear, shallow water perfect for snorkeling. After a leisurely lunch on deck, motor the short distance into the bustling harbor of Sivota (Mourtos). Tie up along the modern town quay and enjoy a vibrant evening in a port that has become a premier destination for the international yachting crowd.
Route Highlights
  • Cruising the deeply forested, rugged coastline of mainland Epirus.
  • Anchoring in the crystal-clear, shallow "Pool" anchorage among the uninhabited Sivota islets.
  • Mooring in the modern, bustling, and highly popular yachting hub of Sivota (Mourtos).

Day 6: Sivota to Corfu Town (Old Port/Mandraki)

Nautical Miles: 22+

Travel Time: 3.5 hours

It is time to leave the mainland and set a northwesterly course back to the island of Corfu. This is the longest passage of the itinerary, offering a fantastic opportunity to hoist the sails, cut the engine, and enjoy the open water as you aim for the island's majestic capital. As you approach the central eastern coast of Corfu, the massive, imposing twin peaks of the Old Venetian Fortress will slowly dominate the horizon.
For a truly unforgettable experience, arrange to moor in the Mandraki Harbor (or NAOK), which is situated literally at the base of the towering fortress walls. Once your lines are secured, you are just a five-minute walk from the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town. Spend the evening wandering the Liston—a stunning, Parisian-style arcade built by the French—getting lost in the labyrinth of narrow, Venetian-gilded alleys (the kandounia), and dining on traditional Corfiot dishes like pastitsada or sofrito.
Route Highlights
  • Enjoying the longest, most rewarding open-water sailing reach of the itinerary back to Corfu.
  • Mooring your yacht directly beneath the spectacular, towering walls of the Old Venetian Fortress.
  • Getting lost in the UNESCO-listed, aristocratic, and deeply historic alleys of Corfu Town.

Day 7: Corfu Town to Gouvia Marina

Nautical Miles: 15+

Travel Time: 2.5 hours

For your final day on the water, delay your return to the marina to take advantage of Corfu's stunning Northeast coast. Cast off from beneath the fortress and sail north along a shoreline famous for its secluded pebble coves and deep, green waters—an area famously documented by the author Lawrence Durrell. Drop your anchor in the pristine bay of Kalami or Agni, where the cypress trees practically touch the water, for a final, restorative swim and perhaps a lingering, water's-edge lunch.
In the mid-afternoon, weigh anchor for the final time and make the short, easy cruise south back to Gouvia Marina. Navigate the buoyed channel into the large basin, back your yacht into its home slip, and complete your checkout procedures. Spend your last evening reflecting on a magnificent week of sailing, having experienced the perfect blend of natural beauty, calm seas, and profound Venetian history that defines the Northern Ionian.
Route Highlights
  • Taking a detour north to anchor in the literary, pine-shaded coves of Kalami or Agni Bay.
  • Enjoying a final, pristine swim in the deep, emerald waters of Corfu's northeastern shore.
  • Successfully navigating the final channel and docking at Gouvia Marina to complete your logbook.
