While the summer Meltemi is the primary consideration, the waters surrounding the island can be deep and unpredictable, with significant currents running between it and its neighbors. It is the only place on the island with access to basic services, such as minimal provisioning and fuel. Because the island is so small and exposed, there are few true "wild" anchorages. However, the sandy bays south of the main port—such as Alonitsi and Lykoudi—can provide spectacular, crystal-clear daytime anchorages in settled, calm weather. These bays offer a stunning, untouched environment, but they are completely open to the west and south, and skippers should never plan an overnight stay here if there is any chance of a wind shift.

Agios Efstratios is an island of resilience. Its history is marked by a tragic 1968 earthquake that destroyed most of the traditional village, which was replaced by the current, modern settlement seen today. However, the island's natural beauty remains untouched. It is a designated Natura 2000 protected area, home to rare bird species and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, which often finds refuge in the island's remote sea caves.

Culturally, the island is deeply welcoming, though understated. There are only a handful of traditional tavernas in the main port, serving exceptionally fresh local seafood, high-quality goat meat, and local dairy products.
