Astypalaia Yacht Charter Guide: The Butterfly of the Aegean
Astypalaia is a charter location in Dodecanese Islands, a yacht charter area in Greece.
Astypalaia Charter Guide
Astypalaia is an island of captivating duality. Geographically bridging the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, it takes the best of both worlds: the stark, brilliant whitewash architecture of the former and the rugged, expansive history of the latter. Shaped remarkably like a butterfly in mid-flight, the island is split into two halves—the "Inner" and "Outer" island—connected by a razor-thin isthmus just 100 meters wide. For a yacht charter, Astypalaia is a pristine, alternative paradise. It caters to sailors who love breathtaking panoramic views, deeply authentic local food, and a pioneering sustainable spirit, as the island is rapidly becoming an eco-friendly model for the entire Mediterranean.
Astypalaia Navigation
Navigating around Astypalaia requires a watchful eye on the open-sea weather, as its position in the south-central Aegean leaves it exposed to the full force of the summer Meltemi. The winds blow hard from the northwest, creating a challenging sea state when crossing the open waters from Amorgos or Kos. The island's butterfly shape creates numerous deep bays, but it also creates intense wind-funneling effects and strong gusts, particularly around the central isthmus at Steno. When cruising the northern coast, give the rocky headlands a wide berth and be prepared for sudden changes in the sea state.

Astypalaia Anchorage
The island's deeply indented coastline provides several exceptional, highly secure options for anchoring. The main port, Pera Gialos, sits directly below the Chora and offers a well-protected town quay with basic facilities for charter yachts, though it can suffer from an uncomfortable swell during rare southerly winds. For a more peaceful and modern berthing experience, many skippers head around the corner to Agios Andreas, the island's new ferry port, which offers great shelter. For those who prefer the tranquility of dropping the hook in nature, the bay of Maltezana (Analipsi) on the eastern wing offers excellent protection from the Meltemi on a sandy-bottomed floor with reliable holding. For an absolute escape, the remote bays of Vathy in the far northeast form a virtually landlocked, fjord-like lagoon that provides supreme shelter in almost any weather condition.
Astypalaia General Information
The absolute crown jewel of the island is the Chora, which is widely considered one of the most visually stunning hilltop villages in the entire Aegean. Perched on a high, rocky promontory, it is crowned by the imposing, dark-stone Querini Castle, built by Venetian nobles in the 13th century. Unlike typical Dodecanese fortresses, the white-washed houses of the Chora are built directly into the outer defensive walls of the castle, creating a striking aesthetic contrast.
At the base of the village, a row of eight beautifully restored traditional red-roofed stone windmills marks the entrance to the main square. Culturally, Astypalaia is remarkably authentic; the local cuisine is famous for pougia (sweet cheese pies with thyme honey) and fresh seafood pasta. It is an island that encourages slow, contemplative exploration—whether you are hiking the old paths to hidden chapels or sitting in a traditional kafenio enjoying a slow morning, completely removed from the noise of mass tourism.
