Astypalaia Yacht Charter Guide: The Butterfly of the Aegean

Astypalaia is an island of captivating duality. Geographically bridging the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, it takes the best of both worlds: the stark, brilliant whitewash architecture of the former and the rugged, expansive history of the latter. Shaped remarkably like a butterfly in mid-flight, the island is split into two halves—the "Inner" and "Outer" island—connected by a razor-thin isthmus just 100 meters wide. Unlike typical Dodecanese fortresses, the white-washed houses of the Chora are built directly into the outer defensive walls of the castle, creating a striking aesthetic contrast.

At the base of the village, a row of eight beautifully restored traditional red-roofed stone windmills marks the entrance to the main square. Culturally, Astypalaia is remarkably authentic; the local cuisine is famous for pougia (sweet cheese pies with thyme honey) and fresh seafood pasta.
