Tilos Yacht Charter Guide: The Eco-Island Sanctuary
Tilos is a charter location in Dodecanese Islands, a yacht charter area in Greece.
Tilos Charter Guide
Tilos is a quiet champion of sustainability, raw natural beauty, and alternative island life. Tucked away between Nisyros and Rhodes, it is globally recognized as the Mediterranean's first entirely energy-sufficient island, running completely on solar and wind power, and operating a pioneering zero-waste model. For a yacht charter, Tilos is a breath of fresh air. It is a destination dedicated to conservationists, hikers, and sailors who crave unspoiled landscapes. Free from the glitz of mass tourism, it offers a deeply peaceful environment where you can step ashore to explore vast bird reserves, an abandoned medieval ghost village, and empty, sun-drenched valleys.
Tilos Navigation
Navigating the waters around Tilos involves sailing the open passages of the southern Dodecanese, where the summer Meltemi blows steadily from the northwest. The island's high, rugged spine creates significant katabatic wind gusts that sweep down the mountainsides, particularly along the sheer cliffs of the western and northern coasts. The eastern coast provides a much flatter, more protected run. The approach to the main harbor of Livadia is wide and straightforward, but skippers should exercise caution when rounding Cape Agios Konstantinos, keeping a safe distance from the rocky shallows.

Tilos Anchorage
The undisputed maritime hub of the island is Livadia, a large, deeply recessed bay on the eastern coast. The town quay offers excellent, modern mooring facilities with access to eco-friendly shore power and water. The harbor provides great protection from the prevailing Meltemi, though a strong easterly or southerly shift can introduce an uncomfortable swell. For those who prefer to drop the hook in a wild setting, Eristos Bay on the south coast offers an expansive sandy bottom with superb holding, though it is completely open to the south. On the north coast, the small fishing harbor of Agios Antonios provides a short pier used mainly by local boats, making it an excellent daytime lunch stop in calm weather before exploring the northern historic sites.
Tilos General Information
Tilos is an island where history and environmental futurism effortlessly coexist. The island has two main living settlements: the port of Livadia and the capital, Megalo Chorio, which sits inland at the foot of a steep hill crowned by a formidable Castle of the Knights of St. John. The island is world-famous among paleontologists for Charkadio Cave, where excavations uncovered the fossilized bones of the last wild dwarf elephants in Europe, which lived here until about 4,000 years ago. You can view these incredible finds at the local museum in Megalo Chorio.
Perhaps the most magical spot on the island is Mikro Chorio (the Small Village). Abandoned entirely by its inhabitants in the 1950s due to water shortages, it is now a hauntingly beautiful ghost village of roofless stone houses and deserted streets. However, on summer nights, a single atmospheric lounge bar opens within one of the restored ruins, illuminated entirely by spotlights that cast an otherworldly glow over the entire mountain slope. Culturally, Tilos is incredibly warm and proud of its green identity; the local tavernas serve exceptional, organic produce, wild herbs, and slow-roasted local goat, offering a rich culinary reward after a day on the water.
