Agistri Yacht Charter Guide: The Emerald Pine Forest of the Saronic
Agistri is a charter location in Saronic & Argolic Gulfs, a yacht charter area in Greece.
Agistri Charter Guide
Lying just a few nautical miles west of Aegina, Agistri is the smallest inhabited island in the Saronic Gulf. While Aegina bustles with historic grandeur and lively commerce, Agistri offers a complete downshift in pace. Known affectionately as the "emerald of the Saronic," it is a tiny, intensely green paradise where dense pine forests cascade down steep limestone cliffs directly into the sea. For yacht charters out of Athens, it serves as a spectacular, tranquil alternative to the busier mainland ports and larger islands.
Agistri is the quintessential relaxing stopover. Because it lacks a large commercial harbor and heavy vehicle traffic, the atmosphere remains effortlessly laid-back. The sailing conditions are identical to Aegina—calm, predictable, and shielded from the harsh summer Meltemi winds that batter the Cyclades. This makes it an ideal destination for novice sailors, families with young children, or crews looking to simply drop anchor, swim in impossibly clear water, and enjoy a quiet afternoon surrounded by nature.
Agistri Navigation
The approach to Agistri is generally simple, but there is one major navigational hazard that requires strict attention: the shallow strait separating Agistri from Aegina. Right in the middle of this channel lies the low, flat islet of Metopi, surrounded by extensive, dangerous reefs and shallow sandy shoals. Skippers must give Metopi a wide berth and strictly follow their charts when passing through this gap. Additionally, the waters around the northern ports of Skala and Megalochori are heavily trafficked by fast-moving "Flying Dolphin" hydrofoils arriving from Piraeus, which throw a significant and sudden wake; ensure you are not lingering in the harbor entrance when one is approaching.

Agistri Anchorage
Agistri is famed for its spectacular daytime anchorages rather than large, full-service marinas. The absolute highlight is Aponisos, a tiny, private islet on the southwest corner connected to the main island by a small footbridge. Dropping anchor in the narrow channel between Agistri and Aponisos feels like mooring in a giant natural swimming pool; the water is a brilliant, translucent turquoise with a rocky and sandy bottom. Yachts typically drop anchor in 5 to 8 meters and run a long stern line ashore to the rocks. For overnight stays, the main port of Megalochori (Milos) offers a small inner basin for yachts, providing good shelter from the north, though spaces are highly limited and you must be prepared for the occasional hydrofoil swell.
Agistri General Information
Despite being less than an hour's hydrofoil ride from the sprawling metropolis of Athens, Agistri feels wonderfully isolated. It has a permanent population of roughly 1,000 residents spread across three main villages: Skala, Megalochori, and Limenaria. The island is so compact that many visitors opt to get around by renting bicycles or mopeds rather than cars, riding along the single coastal road that winds through the fragrant pine forests.
Ashore, Agistri is a nature lover's dream. There are no major archaeological sites or bustling shopping districts here; instead, the appeal lies in hiking the shaded coastal trails, discovering hidden coves, and enjoying long, lazy lunches. The local tavernas take immense pride in their seafood, much of which is caught daily by the small local fleet. A short walk from the port of Skala brings you to the striking blue-domed church of Agioi Anargyroi, while a hike through the pine woods leads to the dramatic, sheer cliffs of Halikada, offering spectacular panoramic views out over the Saronic Gulf.
