Poros Yacht Charter Guide: The Island of the Grand Canal
Poros is a charter location in Saronic & Argolic Gulfs, a yacht charter area in Greece.
Poros Charter Guide
Poros is a highly unique and visually stunning destination within the Saronic Gulf, famous for its dramatic positioning just 200 meters off the coast of the Peloponnese mainland. This extreme proximity creates a long, narrow marine corridor known as the Poros Canal. Sailing down this spectacular waterway feels like cruising down a grand, Venetian-style canal lined on one side by neoclassical pastel mansions and on the other by dense Lemon forests, making it one of the most memorable arrivals on any Greek yacht charter.
For yacht charters out of Athens, Poros serves as a highly strategic middle hub. Geographically split into two islands—the tiny volcanic rock of Sphairia (where the main town sits) and the larger, pine-covered Kalavria—it offers a perfect balance between a lively, cosmopolitan waterfront town and a collection of deeply sheltered, pine-fringed bays. The sailing conditions inside the surrounding gulf are exceptionally calm, protected from open-sea swells and the intense summer Meltemi winds, creating a highly relaxed and enjoyable environment for families and casual cruisers.
Poros Navigation
Navigating the Poros Canal requires strict attention and a careful eye on your surroundings. The canal is a busy marine highway navigated by high-speed hydrofoils, car ferries, local water taxis, and dozens of yachts all squeezing through a channel that is narrow and shallow in places. Yachts must strictly adhere to the designated route, maintain a slow speed, and keep a sharp watch for cross-canal taxi traffic. When approaching the canal from the south, beware of the shallow sandbars extending near the naval base; always stay within the marked track and do not attempt to cut corners, as the depths drop off rapidly outside the channel.

Poros Anchorage
Poros is home to some of the most secure and popular anchorages in the Saronic region. Poros Town Quay offers an extensive, long concrete promenade providing hundreds of stern-to berths with access to water, electricity, and fuel trucks, though you must be prepared for ferry wake and anchoring over crossed anchors in peak season. For a quieter and highly secure evening, Russian Bay (Ormos Rossiko) on the western side of the island offers bulletproof shelter from the prevailing summer winds with a muddy-sand bottom that provides excellent holding. This historic bay allows you to drop anchor in 5 to 10 meters of water and run long lines ashore directly to the stone ruins of an old 19th-century Russian naval storehouse.
Poros General Information
Poros has a rich maritime and literary history, having served as the site of Greece's very first naval base following the War of Independence. The island's striking neoclassical town is built amphitheatrically over a black volcanic ridge, featuring narrow stone alleyways, white-washed walls draped in bright pink bougainvillea, and the iconic white Clock Tower built in 1927 that stands proudly on the highest peak. The town has long been a sanctuary for artists and writers, most notably the poet George Seferis and the American author Henry Miller, who famously wrote that entering the Poros Canal gives an immediate feeling of deep peace and psychological transition.
Ashore, the island is heavily blessed with natural beauty and aromatic vegetation. A quick water taxi ride across the narrow canal brings you to the Peloponnese mainland and the famous Lemonodasos (Lemon Forest), a vast hillside grove packed with tens of thousands of lemon trees and cascading waterfalls that fill the air with a sweet citrus scent during the spring and early summer. On the island itself, renting an electric bicycle allows you to explore the pine-covered hills of Kalavria to visit the atmospheric ruins of the Temple of Poseidon, or stop at the historic Moni Zoodochou Pigis monastery, which sits hidden in a deep, green ravine overlooking the Aegean Sea.
