Antipaxos Yacht Charter Guide: The Caribbean of the Ionian Sea

Antipaxos island, Ionian sea, Greece

Antipaxos is a charter location in Ionian Islands, a yacht charter area in Greece.

Antipaxos Charter Guide

Antipaxos is a tiny, practically uninhabited limestone islet lying just three nautical miles south of Paxos. Despite its minuscule size—measuring barely four square kilometers—it commands legendary status within the Mediterranean yachting community. The island is universally celebrated for possessing some of the most surreal, electric-turquoise waters and powdery white-sand bays in Europe, frequently drawing comparisons to the Caribbean. For any Ionian yacht charter, dedicating a day (and potentially a quiet evening) to this slice of paradise is an absolute must.

Because Antipaxos lacks a commercial harbor or marina, it is primarily experienced as an open-water anchorage. During peak summer midday hours, the northeast coast becomes a buzzing playground for day-tripper boats arriving from Corfu and Paxos. However, the true luxury of a private yacht charter is the ability to drop anchor here early in the morning before the crowds arrive, or to linger into the late afternoon when the commercial tour boats depart, leaving you with an impossibly clear, private swimming pool all to yourself.

Antipaxos Navigation

Navigating toward and around Antipaxos is uncomplicated, featuring deep, clean waters and excellent line-of-sight visibility from Paxos. When approaching the famous northeast bays of Vrika and Voutoumi, the water transitions rapidly from deep indigo to brilliant neon blue, but the sandy bottom shelves gradually and presents no hidden underwater hazards. The rugged west and south coasts are much more exposed, characterized by vertical limestone cliffs and deep water right up to the shoreline. Sailors should give a wide berth to the small rocky islet of Daskalia, located just off the southern tip of the island, to avoid any localized swell or current.

Antipaxos Anchorage

The prime anchorages are concentrated along the sheltered northeast shoreline, specifically within Vrika Bay and Voutoumi Bay. Both offer an expansive, pristine sandy bottom with exceptional holding in 5 to 10 meters of water, allowing you to easily view your anchor resting on the seabed. While these bays provide superb protection from the prevailing summer northwest Maestro winds, they are entirely exposed to the north and east; consequently, they are idyllic daytime stops but should only be used for overnight anchoring when the weather forecast is absolutely settled and calm. If a swell does pick up, the highly protected harbors of Mongonisi or Gaios on Paxos are only a quick 20-minute motor sail away.

Antipaxos General Information

Unlike its neighbors, Antipaxos has no proper towns, villages, or supermarkets, and its permanent population fluctuates down to just a handful of residents in the winter. The interior of the island is surprisingly lush, blanketed not by the sprawling olive groves found on Paxos, but by beautifully manicured, low-lying vineyards. These local vineyards are tended to by families who cross over from Paxos daily, producing highly potent, organic red wines and crisp whites that are rarely exported and can only be sampled at the small selection of seasonal tavernas operating on the island.

Ashore, life is intentionally primitive and deeply relaxing. A few simple steps and winding dirt paths connect the main beaches to the clifftop tavernas, where you can enjoy lunch alongside panoramic views of your yacht bobbing in the neon water below. At the southern tip of the island stands an old stone lighthouse built in 1833, which serves as a great hiking goal for those looking to stretch their legs on land before retreating back to the comfort of their deck for a sunset swim.
