Kefalonia Yacht Charter Guide: The Majestic Giant of the South Ionian
Kefalonia is a charter location in Ionian Islands, a yacht charter area in Greece.
Kefalonia Charter Guide
As the largest island in the Ionian archipelago, Kefalonia (Cephalonia) offers a cruising experience defined by sheer scale and dramatic contrasts. From the towering peak of Mount Ainos to the impossibly vibrant blue waters of its world-famous beaches, the island provides a breathtaking backdrop for a yacht charter. Unlike smaller islands where you might hop between anchorages in an hour or two, sailing Kefalonia feels like a true expedition, with deep gulfs, sweeping bays, and distinct coastal villages that each offer their own unique atmosphere.
The sailing conditions here perfectly balance relaxation with exhilarating afternoon breezes. The eastern coastline, facing the sheltered Ithaca Channel, is highly favored by sailors. It offers calm morning waters and reliable northwesterly Maestro winds in the afternoon, ideal for brisk, flat-water sailing before tucking into a protected harbor for the night. In contrast, the rugged western coast is exposed to the open sea and offers spectacular daytime cruising past towering cliffs, provided the weather remains settled.
Kefalonia Navigation
Because of Kefalonia's vast size, itinerary planning requires factoring in longer sailing distances compared to the rest of the Ionian. When navigating the Ithaca Channel—the strait separating Kefalonia from Ithaca—be prepared for the wind to funnel and accelerate, often blowing 5 to 10 knots stronger than in the surrounding open water. The western coast, home to the famous Myrtos Beach and the stunning village of Assos, is completely exposed to the prevailing northwest swell, meaning these spots are strictly fair-weather, daytime anchorages. If you plan to visit the capital, Argostoli, you will need to navigate the long, deep Gulf of Argostoli on the southwest coast, keeping an eye out for the commercial ferry traffic operating in the bay.

Kefalonia Anchorage
Kefalonia offers a diverse mix of bustling town quays and remote, pine-scented coves. In the north, the bay of Fiskardo is incredibly popular; since the town quay fills up early, many yachts drop anchor in the surrounding coves of Foki or northern bays, running long lines ashore to the rocks. On the east coast, the ports of Sami and Agia Efimia offer excellent protection from the prevailing northwesterlies, with good holding in mud and sand. For a truly unique overnight stop in calm weather, the horseshoe bay beneath the Venetian castle of Assos provides a spectacular setting, though it is deep and requires ample chain and a vigilant watch on the wind direction.
Kefalonia General Information
Kefalonia's geography is nothing short of epic. It is the only Ionian island with a dedicated national park, centered around the 1,628-meter Mount Ainos, which is covered in a rare species of dark fir tree found nowhere else in the world. The island gained massive international fame as the setting for the novel and film Captain Corelli's Mandolin, which perfectly captured its rugged beauty and the resilient spirit of its people. Tragically, a massive earthquake in 1953 leveled much of the island, which is why most of its towns feature modern construction—with the notable exception of Fiskardo in the far north, which miraculously survived intact and retains its original 18th-century Venetian architecture.
Ashore, the island offers an abundance of natural wonders and culinary delights. You can take a short trip from Sami to explore the subterranean Melissani Cave, where you paddle a rowboat over an underground lake illuminated by a collapsed roof, or visit the massive stalactites of Drogarati Cave. The local cuisine is distinct and hearty; be sure to try Kefalonian meat pie (Kreatopita) and pair it with a chilled glass of Robola, a crisp, dry white wine produced exclusively from grapes grown on the high-altitude slopes of Mount Ainos.
