Diapontia Islands Yacht Charter Guide: The Untamed Frontier of the North Ionian
Diapontia Islands is a charter location in Ionian Islands, a yacht charter area in Greece.
Diapontia Islands Charter Guide
Located at the far northwestern edge of Greece, just a few nautical miles off the coast of Corfu, the Diapontia Islands (Othonoi, Ereikoussa, and Mathraki) represent the final, untamed frontier of the Ionian Sea. For charter clients seeking absolute tranquility, unspoiled natural beauty, and an escape from the busy summer marinas, this miniature archipelago is a hidden gem. These islands offer a taste of what Greek island sailing was like decades ago—where the focus is firmly on dropping anchor in breathtaking, secluded bays and connecting with the handful of locals who still call these remote outposts home.
Because they sit at the crossroads between the Adriatic and the Ionian, sailing here requires a slightly more adventurous spirit than navigating the highly sheltered inland seas of the South Ionian. However, the reward is unparalleled. From the pine-fringed sandy beaches of Ereikoussa to the dramatic white cliffs of Othonoi (often cited as Homer's mythical island of Ogygia, where the nymph Calypso kept Odysseus captive), the Diapontias provide a rare, off-the-beaten-path sailing experience.
Diapontia Islands Navigation
Navigating the Diapontia Islands requires vigilant attention to your charts and the weather forecast. While the islands are only 8 to 12 nautical miles apart, they are exposed to the open sea and feel the full force of the prevailing summer Maestro (northwest) winds. The sea state can build significantly here, making approaches occasionally challenging. Othonoi, the westernmost point of Greece, requires particular care; sailors must give a wide berth to its eastern cape and watch for the Aspri Petra reef when approaching from the south. Mathraki is fringed by numerous rocky islets and shallow reefs on its western side, so approaches should generally be made from the east. It is crucial to have a backup plan (such as returning to the sheltered northern coast of Corfu) if the weather turns, as safe all-weather harbors in the Diapontias are extremely limited.

Diapontia Islands Anchorage
Anchoring in the Diapontia Islands is mostly a fair-weather affair, but the locations are spectacular. On Othonoi, the main port of Ammos offers limited mooring, but the true prize is dropping anchor off the magnificent Aspri Ammos (White Sand) beach on the west coast. It boasts a sandy bottom with good holding, backed by sheer white cliffs and an explorable cave, though it is fully exposed to the west. On Ereikoussa, the wide bay in front of the main village (Porto) provides good holding in sand (5–8 meters) and decent protection from the northwest, making it the most reliable overnight stop in the group. Mathraki offers excellent daytime anchoring off the long, sandy stretch of Portello Beach on its eastern shore, though it remains exposed to anything other than a westerly breeze.
Diapontia Islands General Information
Life in the Diapontia Islands is wonderfully slow and deeply traditional. With a combined permanent population of only a few hundred people—many of whom are olive growers or fishermen—these islands have successfully resisted mass tourism. Othonoi, the largest of the three, is a hiker's paradise, characterized by rugged mountains, ancient ruins of Venetian castles, and a network of old trails connecting its 13 tiny, stone-built villages. Ereikoussa, named after the heather (reiki) that grows abundantly across the island, is lush, green, and flat, offering a gentle, family-friendly atmosphere.
Mathraki, the smallest and most heavily wooded, is perhaps the quietest of all. It is famous among those in the know for its incredibly long, untouched eastern beach and simple, welcoming tavernas. When visiting these islands, it is essential to arrive well-provisioned from Corfu, as local amenities are very basic. There are no large supermarkets or extensive marine services here—just fresh seafood, pristine nature, and the rare luxury of profound silence.
