Andros Yacht Charter Guide: The Verdant Gateway to the Cyclades

Andros island, Greece. Traditional village and coastline.

Andros is a charter location in Cyclades Islands, a yacht charter area in Greece.

Andros Charter Guide

Andros, the northernmost island of the Cyclades, stands apart from its arid, whitewashed neighbors with its lush green valleys, rushing streams, and forested mountains. This surprisingly verdant landscape makes Andros a favorite among sailors seeking a more temperate, wooded environment while still enjoying the characteristic Cycladic architecture and pristine beaches. Its proximity to Athens (just 2 hours by ferry from Rafina) makes it an excellent starting or ending point for yacht charters exploring the Northern Cyclades.

The island's sailing conditions reflect its position at the gateway between the Aegean and the open Cyclades, with the Meltemi winds arriving slightly moderated compared to islands further south. The eastern coast is heavily indented with numerous deep bays and small fishing harbors, providing excellent day anchorages and overnight shelter. The western coast faces the open strait toward Evia and experiences stronger winds and swell, making it more suitable for experienced crews in settled weather.

Andros Navigation

Navigating to Andros from Athens requires crossing the South Evian Gulf, which can experience significant wind acceleration effects, particularly in the strait between Cape Kafireas (Evia) and the northern tip of Andros. This passage should be carefully timed with the weather forecast. The main port of Gavrio on the northwest coast offers excellent protection and is easily approached, though ferry traffic is heavy during summer months. When sailing the eastern coast, mariners should be aware of the numerous rocky islets and reefs, particularly around the capital Chora and the southern cape. The lighthouse at Cape Gerakas marks the southeastern extremity and should be given a wide berth in strong winds.

Andros Anchorage

Andros provides numerous excellent anchorages along its sheltered eastern coastline. Gavrio Bay offers the most comprehensive facilities with a modern marina, fuel, water, and easy access to supermarkets and tavernas. Further south, the beautiful bay of Batsi is a favorite overnight anchorage with excellent holding in sand, good protection from the Meltemi, and a charming waterfront village. Ormos Korthi on the southeast coast is a large, deeply indented bay providing all-weather protection and serving as an excellent base for exploring the wilder southern part of the island. For daytime stops, the crystal-clear waters of Achla Beach and Vitali Bay offer spectacular swimming in sheltered conditions.

Andros General Information

Andros has a distinguished maritime heritage, having produced some of Greece's most successful shipping families. This wealth is reflected in the island's impressive neoclassical mansions, particularly in Chora (Andros Town), where elegant captain's houses line narrow marble-paved streets. The capital features several world-class museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Archaeological Museum, making it one of the most culturally rich small towns in the Cyclades.

The island's unique geology provides abundant freshwater, resulting in lush vegetation, numerous working watermills, and beautiful hiking trails through wooded valleys. Andros is particularly famous for its network of ancient stone paths (collectively known as the Andros Routes) that connect villages and monasteries, offering excellent shore excursions for active charter guests. Local cuisine emphasizes the island's agricultural bounty, including excellent cheeses, wild greens, and the famous Andros froutalias (a traditional omelet with local sausage and potatoes).
