Kea Yacht Charter Guide: The Athenian Riviera of the Cyclades

Kea island, Greece. Bay of Vourkari and harbor.

Kea is a charter location in Cyclades Islands, a yacht charter area in Greece.

Kea Charter Guide

Kea (Tzia) is the closest Cycladic island to Athens, lying just 12 nautical miles southeast of Cape Sounion. This proximity has made it the favored weekend retreat for affluent Athenians, resulting in an island that balances authentic Cycladic character with sophisticated infrastructure and services. For yacht charters departing from Athens or Lavrion, Kea represents an ideal first or last stop, offering excellent marina facilities, provisioning options, and beautiful anchorages within just a few hours of sailing from the mainland.

The island's coastline is deeply indented with numerous protected bays, particularly along the northern and western shores, making it an excellent all-weather destination. Unlike the stark, barren beauty of many Cycladic islands, Kea is relatively green, with oak forests covering its valleys and hills. The sailing conditions are typically more moderate than the islands further south, though the summer Meltemi still provides reliable afternoon breezes for enjoyable sailing.

Kea Navigation

The approach to Kea from Lavrion is straightforward, typically taking 2-3 hours under sail or motor. The main port of Korissia (also called Livadi) on the northwest coast is well-sheltered and easily approached, with clear navigation marks. The bay of Vourkari, just northeast of Korissia, has become a premier yachting destination with an excellent modern marina. When rounding the western and southern coasts, be aware of the occasional strong gusts that can funnel down from the interior valleys. The eastern coast is more exposed to the Meltemi and should be approached with caution in strong northerly winds.

Kea Anchorage

Kea offers exceptional anchoring and berthing options for visiting yachts. Korissia Bay provides excellent all-weather protection with good holding in mud and sand, plus a long town quay suitable for stern-to mooring. The adjacent Vourkari Bay features a modern marina with full services, fuel, water, electricity, and shore facilities, making it one of the finest yacht harbors in the Western Cyclades. For a quieter experience, Otzias Bay on the north coast offers a beautiful sandy beach with good holding and protection from southerly winds. The stunning bay of Koundouros on the southwest coast provides excellent daytime anchorage in crystal-clear waters, though it can be exposed to afternoon sea breezes.

Kea General Information

Kea has a rich ancient history, having been one of the wealthiest islands in the Cyclades during classical times, with four major city-states. The most famous archaeological site is the Temple of Athena at Karthaia on the southern coast, accessible via a beautiful hiking trail. The island's capital, Ioulis (Chora), is built amphitheatrically on a hillside 5km inland from the port, preserving its traditional character with narrow cobbled streets, neoclassical mansions, and the famous ancient Lion of Kea, a monumental sculpture carved from granite around 600 BCE.

Modern Kea offers excellent dining, with the harbor towns of Korissia and Vourkari featuring numerous high-quality tavernas and seafood restaurants popular with the Athenian sailing crowd. The island is known for its local specialties including pasteli (honey and sesame bars), fresh goat cheese, and excellent local wines. Shore excursions can include visits to the charming capital, the archaeological sites, or walks through the oak forests to discover the island's network of ancient paths and springs.
