Thirasia Yacht Charter Guide: The Forgotten Side of the Caldera

Thirasia is the "other" Santorini. Separated from the famous main island by the cataclysmic volcanic eruption of the 17th century BCE, Thirasia remains a preserved snapshot of what its neighbor looked like before the arrival of mass tourism. For a yacht charter, it offers a rare perspective: you can gaze back across the caldera toward the bustling white cliffs of Oia while enjoying the profound, rustic quiet of a place that feels stuck in time. It is a destination for sailors who want to experience the volcanic drama of the caldera but crave the simplicity, traditional agriculture, and silence of a truly local Greek island.

Navigating into Thirasia is essentially navigating into the Santorini caldera. From the sea, the island appears as a steep, inaccessible wall of stratified volcanic rock. The main entry points are the small harbors of Riva and Korfos. Skippers must be extremely cautious of the deep, plunging water depths near the cliffs and the presence of heavy ferry traffic passing through the caldera basin. During the summer, the Meltemi can create sudden, violent downdrafts as it rolls over the island's high rim. Always maintain a sharp lookout, use your engine for close-quarters maneuvering, and ensure your ground tackle is ready, as the volcanic seabed can be uneven and deep.

The most traditional spot to moor is the tiny harbor of Korfos, which features a small quay used by local excursion boats and fishing vessels. For overnighting, most charter yachts prefer to anchor in the deep water off the southern or southwestern coasts where the slope is slightly less extreme, or they utilize the designated mooring buoys if available.
