Koufonisia Yacht Charter Guide: The Caribbean of the Cyclades

Koufonisia is a dream destination for any sailor seeking the closest thing to the Caribbean in the Aegean. Comprising two main islands—Pano Koufonisi (Upper) and Kato Koufonisi (Lower)—the group is famous for its stunningly bright, turquoise, and shallow waters. For a yacht charter, it is an absolute highlight, defined by long, sandy stretches of beach and a laid-back, bohemian atmosphere that feels distinctly unhurried. While Pano Koufonisi is the lively hub of shops and tavernas, Kato Koufonisi is a protected, uninhabited wilderness of untouched coves, making this duo the perfect contrast for a multi-day stop.

Cruising the waters of Koufonisia is a delight due to the deep, navigable channels between the islands, but skippers must remain alert to the Meltemi. When the north wind is strong, it funnels through the strait between the islands, creating significant chop. Approach the main port on Pano Koufonisi with care, as it is small and can become very crowded with ferry traffic and day-tripping boats in July and August. Always check your depth when venturing close to the shoreline, as the sandy shoals are extensive and highly inviting but shallow.

The main port on Koufonisia offers a small quay for docking, though it fills up fast; many charter yachts prefer to anchor in the sheltered bays nearby to maintain a sense of space. Pori Bay, on the northeast side of Pano Koufonisi, is one of the most beautiful and protected anchorages in the area, featuring a deep sandy bottom and protection from the Meltemi. For a wilder experience, head across the narrow channel to Kato Koufonisi, where numerous secluded anchorages—such as the bay of Nero—offer crystal-clear water and absolute tranquility for an overnight stay away from the village lights.

Pano Koufonisi is the only inhabited island of the group, and its small, whitewashed Chora is a charming maze of traditional architecture that feels much more intimate than the larger Cycladic capitals. The island is small enough to explore entirely on foot or by bicycle, and there is a beautiful coastal path that leads you past some of the most iconic "natural pools" and sea caves in the region.

Kato Koufonisi, by contrast, is a protected ecological site. Aside from a few scattered summer houses and a handful of tavernas that open seasonally, it is entirely free of development. It serves as a fantastic playground for those who love snorkeling and swimming, with the narrow channel between the two islands often referred to as the "Blue Lagoon" of the Cyclades. The local gastronomy is heavily focused on fresh seafood, and you will find some of the finest grilled fish in the archipelago served right on the sand at the beachside tavernas.
