Delos Yacht Charter Guide: The Sacred Heart of the Ancient Aegean

Delos island, Greece. Ancient ruins and Terrace of the Lions.

Delos is a charter location in Cyclades Islands, a yacht charter area in Greece.

Delos Charter Guide

Delos stands as one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean, a tiny uninhabited island that served as the sacred birthplace of Apollo and Artemis in Greek mythology. For yacht charters exploring the Cyclades, a visit to Delos is absolutely essential—not for overnight stays (which are prohibited), but for an unforgettable day exploring the remarkably well-preserved ruins of what was once the religious, political, and commercial center of the ancient Aegean.

Located just 2 nautical miles southwest of Mykonos, Delos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring temples, theaters, houses, mosaics, and the famous Terrace of the Lions. Arriving by private yacht offers a distinct advantage over the day-tripper crowds from Mykonos, allowing you to time your visit for early morning or late afternoon when the site is quieter and the light is most dramatic. The sailing conditions around Delos can be challenging due to its exposed position directly in the path of the Meltemi, requiring careful attention to anchoring and weather.

Delos Navigation

Approaching Delos requires careful navigation due to the shallow waters, underwater ruins, and rocky outcrops surrounding the island. The primary anchorage is in the bay on the west coast, directly in front of the ancient harbor and archaeological site. This anchorage is exposed to winds from the southwest through northwest, meaning it should only be used in settled weather or when the Meltemi is blowing from the north, providing some lee from the island itself. Mariners must maintain a vigilant anchor watch, as the holding can be poor in patches of sand over rock and weed. The ancient harbor moles, though partially submerged, are still visible and marked, requiring careful navigation to avoid grounding.

Delos Anchorage

The main anchorage at Delos is in front of the archaeological site on the western coast, typically in 3-8 meters over sand and weed. While the holding is generally adequate, the exposure to swell and the busy day-tripper boat traffic means this is strictly a daytime anchorage for visiting yachts. It is essential to ensure your anchor is well set before going ashore, and many yachts choose to leave a crew member aboard for security. The narrow channel between Delos and the neighboring island of Rinia (Rhenia) to the west offers additional anchorage options with better protection, though you will need to dinghy across to reach the archaeological site. Anchoring is prohibited within 150 meters of the ancient harbor structures.

Delos General Information

According to Greek mythology, Delos was the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis, born to Leto after she found refuge on this tiny island. By the 7th century BCE, Delos had become the religious center of the Cyclades, and by the Hellenistic period, it evolved into the most important commercial port in the Eastern Mediterranean, with a population reaching 30,000. The island's prosperity is evident in the extensive ruins: the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Agora of the Competaliasts, residential quarters with stunning mosaic floors (particularly the House of Dionysus and the House of Masks), and the Terrace of the Lions, where the iconic marble lion statues have guarded the Sacred Lake for over 2,500 years.

Today, Delos is managed by the Greek Ministry of Culture, with strict regulations prohibiting overnight stays, camping, or removing any artifacts. Visiting hours are typically from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM in summer, with an entrance fee required. The site is extensive, covering most of the small island, so visitors should plan for at least 2-3 hours of exploration. There are no facilities on the island beyond a small museum and basic toilet facilities, so visiting yachts should arrive well-provisioned with water, sun protection, and appropriate footwear for walking on ancient stone paths.
